De basic commands handling sheep

At handling sheep we use a number of commands which the dog must learn. The commands make the dog being sent away and brings the sheep in the direction you want. In the beginning you have enough with a number of basic commands. These are frequently given in English, but can also be trained in other languages.

The moment you have progressed further, there still will come a couple of commands. You can also, if you and the dog know the commands well, give whistle signals. This isn't easy, because the whistle signals must always be the same like the commands which you give.

Here some basic commands with whistle sound. Click on the Play button. You can make your one whistle sound signals of course.

Lie down  Lie down

Lie Down: This is the "emergency brake" for the dog. A border collie can lie-down within a few seconds. Some dogs just stop walking and stand still, often with their head low, that's allowed. It is a 'stop sign' and the dog won't walk on.

Walk on   Walk on

Walk on: This is an encouraging walking straight on to the sheep. This command will be used by the fetch and the drive. An advanced border will make corrections to the left or right by himself for handling the herd in a straight line.

Come bye  Lie down

Come bye: The dog flanking to the left around the herd. (From where you standing, to the right) It's a bit difficult in the beginning, but you will learn it very quickly.

        Away  Away

Away: The dog flanking to the right around the herd. (Also from where you standing, to the left)

That'll do    That'll do

That'll do: This is the command for ending the job. The dog must come at once, its done!
